Test excavations (96E0247) on the site of a new courthouse, just S of the present building that is probably early 19th century in date, identified archaeological levels and seven isolated burials, which in the main could be medieval in date and associated with the cemetery of the Franciscan friary (ME036-048025-) but was not the core of the cemetery. The archaeological levels were sealed under raft foundations for the new structure (Purcell 1999, 2000). Further archaeological testing (00E0700) by M. E. Byrne in the same area uncovered two further articulated and several other disarticulated sets of human remains (excavations.ie: 2000:781).
